GISC Seoul Catalog

The following catalogs provide a list and information of world weather data from GISC Seoul.

  • Contents of information : Users can search the data from GISC Seoul portal, download the data, and utilize the data after confirming the desired data information such as file format, file name, observation element, observation point and observation time in the catalog.

1.Data Type
TAC : (Traditional Alphanumeric Codes) Text format with alphanumeric characters(ASCII format)
TDCF : (Table Driven Code Forms) Three types of table-based data structure types that complement the disadvantages of TAC
  • BUFR : (Binary Universal Form for the Representation of Meteorological Data) Mainly used for observation data such as satellite observation, aerial observation, wind profiler observation, tropical cyclone information
  • CREX : (Character Form for the Representation and Exchange of Data) Mainly used for exchanging data and tropical cyclone information on ozone, radioactivity, water resources, tide gauge, soil temperature, etc.
  • GRIB : (Processed Data in the form of grid-point values expressed in binary form) Grid data type mainly used for satellite data, numerical forecast, etc.

2. CodeForm : WMO Code Manual(Manual on Codes; In the form of data in accordance with WMO-No. 306, in the form of "FM-Roman numerals" according to the number of sessions adopted or revised by WMO CSM / CBS (since 1974) (e.g. FM12 Surface observation, FM13 SHIP observation, FM18 Buoy observation)
Download reference :
3. File Name : The file naming convention (WMO abbreviated heading) as defined in the World Meteorological Organization is T1T2A1A2ii, and the type and nature of the data can be known from T1T2A1A2ii
※ e.g. SMKO : S(Surface) M(Main) KO(Korea) = Korea's surface observation data observed on time(TAC)
ISMC : I(BUFR) S(Surface) M(Main) C(Northeast Asia Area) = Surface observation data of Northeast Asia region observed on time(BUFR)

4. Collection path : Data Exchange Hub Center to distribute world weather data
5. Category : The data policy determined by the consent of the Member States of the World Meteorological Organization
  • E (Essential) : Materials available to anyone without conditions
  • A (Additional) : Restrict access to data in accordance with policies established by the data producing country (center)
  • O (Other) : This is data that does not belong to E or A, and most are aviation data.
Download reference :
6. Production center code(CCCC) : Mark as CCCC according to WMO file naming rule (WMO abbreviated heading) to data producing country
※ e.g. RKSL(KMA), RJTD(JMA) EGGR(UKMO)
Download reference :
7. Distribution start date : Date on which data was first distributed
8. Observation time : Observed time (e.g. 00, 03, 06 UTC)
9. Observation element : Observation element (e.g. Temperature, wind direction, wind speed, precipitation)
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has been working for several years towards upgrading its global infrastructure to support all of its international programmes of work, both operational and research-based, to collect, share and disseminate information. The new infrastructure is called the WIS, the WMO Information System, and identifies three top-level functions. These are:
  • GISC: Global Information System Centre
  • DCPC: Data Collection or Production Centre
  • NC: National Centre.
All three functions contribute to the circulation of priority data, system wide security, monitoring and implementation of WMO data policies. GISCs, DCPCs and NCs allow the Discovery Access and Retrieval of data, products and services offered by WIS Centres over the world. KMA was designated as 「GISC Seoul」 in 2012. Since 2013, it has been operated with OpenWIS which was developed as dedicated software by KMA(Korea), Met.Office(U.K.), MF(France), MFI(France) and BoM(Australia). Recently, KMA customized the latest versioned OpenWIS to serve various metadata of GEOSS so that users can take not only meteorological data but also non-meteorological ones for better social and economical community.
